09 Sep Walk through the streets of Valletta
Valletta has been named European Capital of Culture(ECoC) for 2018, by a jury of experts, following a presentation by the Valletta 2018 Foundation in October 2012. This capital city is made for walking. Driving is neither recommended nor practical in the city, so enter on foot from City Gate through Malta’s central bus terminus. The waft of date cakes, the hustle and bustle of business people and tourists, and the grand gate itself recently given a face lift designed by Renzo Piano, makes for a memorable entrance to the city.
Immediately ahead is Republic Street, the city’s main artery, leading from the City Gate all the way down to Fort St Elmo at the tip of Valletta’s promontory. It is not only the historical focus of the city but it is also the main shopping street, with popular boutiques, small shopping malls and old fashioned cafe’s. This video entitled “Walking in Valletta” produced by Visit Malta gives you a little taste of what walking through the streets of Valletta feels like.
